There is a nearby sister named Salviah in need of some help. She is from Kenya and has been given approval for two of her children to come live in the US. They are around the ages of 18 and 20. Salviah lives and works in an assisted living facility and is looking for temporary housing for her children while they figure out where they will be attending college.

A Special Request from the Stake Relief Society:

Growing up in the church conferences have always been an enjoyable part of my life. I remember looking forward with great anticipation for youth conferences and EFYs in my youth. I enjoyed being among friends and having fun, but it didn't take long to discovered that conferences provided me a bit of extra spiritual juice that helped me feel recharged and capable of facing difficult things ahead. The days of my youth may be long gone, but the need to step back from the world to be among friends and get that spiritual recharge is needed more than ever. Luckily conferences are not just for the youth. If you have ever attended a Time out for Women, BYU Women's Conference, or Education Week I imagine that you too walked away rejuvenated by the words spoken, the spirit you felt, and the bond of sisterhood that surrounded you. And I bet you couldn't wait for the next one. Whether you have experienced conferences before or longed to have the opportunity, we have some great news- it's time to take a break, to put some time aside for yourself, and to come join your friends in the Chandler Stake for Women's Conference! The best part is, you don't have to travel, you don't have to spend any money to attend, and we're going to feed you snacks and a fabulous lunch! But here is where we need your help. We've lined up some great speakers and rounded up the best food, but we need to get a general idea of who will be attending and how you will most likely spend your time that day.

New Cooking Club

We just want to let you know about a new cooking club that we are going to be starting. Many of you have expressed an interest in learning about cooking/baking from ethnic dishes to quick healthy recipes so we thought a monthly cooking club might be just the thing to meet your needs. We are going to be holding the "club meetings" the first Thursday of each month at Renee Griffiths' home, starting at 8PM (so that those with young children can get the kiddos fed and to bed before they slip out the door). We will try to keep the classes about 1 hour long so you are not out too late. We hope to cover a variety of topics. This month we will have a special speaker, one of Renee's friends who is a chef, who will give us time saving tips in the kitchen. Obviously, this month's meeting will not be on the 1st Thursday because that has passed and we already had something on the schedule. We will be meeting this Wednesday, February 9th @ 8:00 PM at Renee's to kick it off. We hope that all who are interested will be able to attend.

Our ward Halloween Party is coming up on Saturday evening, October 30 from 5:30 to 8PM in the West parking lot at the church!! Come and enjoy dinner and a fun evening together, topped off with the traditional parade of spooks through the parking lot as they visit your trunk to collect a treat (there are 275 primary kiddos in our ward, plus some older kids). Feel free bring a crock-pot full of soup or chili to share! There will be a contest for the best decorated trunk! Sister McDonald also needs helpers to make corn bread.

Powdered Milk Presentation

November 3rd - The Help by Kathryn Stockett. A novel about..."three women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women-mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends-view one another." The Help is available through both Chandler and Maricopa County Library systems.

December 1st - The Silence of God by Gale Sears. A historical novel based on a true story about an LDS family living in Russia when the Russian revolution breaks out.

Where: ASU Institute Building, 1000 S McAllister, Tempe,AZ

Who: Anyone who is thinking about adoption, thinking about placing a child for adoption, adoptive applicants, birth families, adoptive parents, those who were adopted, Stake Agency Representatives, Adoption Professionals, and others.

What: Over 30 classes to choose from with topics such as Adoption Basics, Infertility, International Adoption and Cultural Identity, Adoption Advocacy, Adoption and Schools, Avoiding Adoption Fraud, Post Placement Expectations and Communication. Also hear some stories of adoption from panels of Adoptees, Birthmothers, Birthgrandparents, and Adoptive Parents.

We will be privileged to hear from and visit with amazing adoption advocates such as Lindsey Redfern of "theRhouse" blog, Kerstin Daynes author of "Infertility: Help, Hope, and Healing", Heidi Naylor of the National FSA Board, Lewis Tenney, Sharon Slater of Family Watch International, and other amazing speakers and entertainers.

We will also have representatives from AZDES Foster Care, other adoption agencies, adoption attorneys ,etc to learn about option to adopt in ways other than through LDS Family Services.

And afterwards (about 8:30), meet at Nielson's Custard for desert! It located at 1901 E. Southern (NW corner of Gilbert and Southern). Please meet us for dessert even if you're not able to attend the session!

Exchange Students Need Homes!

Here are a couple of kids who need emergency new homes!

First - Alex from Barcelona, Spain has been living temporarily with my family (Natalie & Dave Whitlock). His original family changed their minds but he already had his school acceptance and his ticket to Phoenix, so he came. We adore him and have NO complaints. Unfortunately, the school insists he reside within their boundaries and we don't... SO, we are desperately seeking a home for him within the Chandler High school boundaries. They want him moved by monday!!

The other student in need is a young lady from Finland, Saara. Her host mom lives in an older home and her bedroom is in the basement. Saara appears to be allergic to the mold/dust there or in some way the environment is making her sick. I was skeptical at first but she's been to the doctor and now again last night, the emergency room. Her sinuses are infected and inflamed and getting worse. Her natural family is very concerned and wants her moved asap. I can't say that I blame them. And frankly, she was going to have to move anyway, as the current host family is loosing their home and moving into an apartment, so better now than later I suppose :) She attends a charter school in Queen Creek but they also bus, so the possible locations where she could live are more flexible.

If you would think on these two situations, spread the word, make a few calls, post to your facebook, or ANYTHING you can do to help find a family (temp or permanent) for one of these students, it would be so appreciated! We've been working on them for days (weeks in the case of Alex) and we're at a dead end... We may also have a girl from South Korea and one from China needing new homes soon too... Most students and their families work out great but there are always a few despite everyone's best efforts that for one reason or another need new homes, and it's obviously a challenge :)

Thanks for your help and we hope to give these kids some good news soon!

Francisca is very an affectionate and sociable child. She loves being around people and sharing things about her day. Francisca enjoys playing with her dolls, singing and playing with her younger siblings. Francisca enjoys doing puzzles and coloring activities. This year she attended 1st Grade in regular classes and advanced to 2nd grade in the fall.

Anthony is described as an outgoing child that loves to laugh. He enjoys puzzles, learning new things and playing with cars. Anthony interacts well with peers and adults. He follows instructions and redirection is not hard with Anthony. Caregivers note that he Anthony is very friendly, likeable and does not shy away from new people. Anthony attends daycare.

Gabriella is very likeable and outgoing, quick learner and enjoys being around peers. She loves playing with dolls and toys that make music. She is not school aged. Caregivers describe her as a happy child, quick learner and can be a little defiant at times.

Victor is a very friendly and happy baby. He enjoys exploring his surroundings and is a quick learner. Victor is not school age and stays home with caregivers.

III. Characteristics of Adoptive Family Desired (describe the type of family best suited to meet the child's needs, i.e. older children, being the only child, family with certain experiences)

The children expressed that they do not want to be adopted by a Hispanic family and prefers a Caucasian family. They would like a family that will adopt and raise them together. They would like a family that loves them and treats them well. The children also express they want a family that goes to church and prays every night. A family that has a clean home and does not spank is also important to them.

The children will thrive in a home where they are the only children or with a few other children. They need consistency, structure and assurance that they are loved. The children respond well to one-on-one attention, so it's important that the parents are patient and can give them individualize attention. They also need to be shown how a healthy and stable family interacts with one another.

The children were formerly part of a sibling group of 6 and are now being adopted seperately.

Mind, Body & Soul - Stake RS Night

Our Stake Meeting on August 19th. It is titled "Mind, Body and Soul". It will be like a Ward RS Meeting. We are starting @ 6:30 and breaking into workshops by 6:45. We have 3 outstanding classes and the sisters can pick two of them. Bring your neighbors and non-member friends, this will be a great evening to share with them. This evening will be held at the Stake Bldg on Ray & McQueen. Light refreshments provided.

"My body and brain after 40". This class will be taught by
Dr.Joe Brooks who is a Obstetrician/Gynecologist. He will
address the changes that come, why we feel like we do and
what things we need to during the aging years.

Class 2
"Why do I feel this way?"- This class will deal with anxiety/
depression.Sarah Williams is a family therapist and
psychologist and will talk about hormones, remedies and
when someone might need extra help.

Class 3
"Are we happy yet?"- Taught by Nancy Whyte. Nancy is a
recovery room nurse who address what keeps us from
finding true happiness.

Ward Social - Not Your Sunday Sundae

We are all being split up by host families and we will each be assigned where to go once you sign up (see below) and then you will bring either a topping to share or a type of paper goods to share. Aloha Cooper Sisters

Aloha sister of Cooper 2nd. There must have been 60+ "8 cow women" at our quarterly Luau party last week. We all ate well and where uplifted my Melinda Crapo's message on self worth and our divine roles as mothers and daughters of God. We sure missed all of the sisters that didn't come but don't worry there will be another party coming up in the Fall.

Kim was picking on Candacy about her ever so stylish green Hawaiian lei and brown shirt.

Rene and her deck of cards, she is trying to get a pick up game of cards on the stairs.

Heather is obviously upset that Rene is playing cards on the stairs again!

Look at the matching lei and outfit Lynlee is sporting, note to Candacy wear green shirt next time.

An 8 Cow Wife - Quarterly Activity

Calling all 8 cow wives to our Cooper 2nd Ward RS quarterly activity May 13th at 6pm at the Votaw's home (3617 E Kaibab Pl).

Hawaiian Plate Dinner is provided! Bring a dessert to share and come enjoy your other fellow 8 cow wives and watch the original movie outside under the stars. Bring a folding law chair; Hawaiian attire is not required but is encouraged. Hawaiian trinkets and embellishments will be provided.

Bread Class - Night 1 No Rise Wheat Bread

April Gould taught us all how to make homemade healthy wheat bread with out any rise time. Amazing! This was week #1 in our series on Bread Making. We know that all you ladies and your families will benefit from learning how to use your wheat and staples in your food storage not to mention enjoy the yummy bread you can make at home. We hope you all can attend our classes on the 8th and the 15th where we will be learning how to make Artisan Bread. Thank you April for opening up your home for such a fun class!

Relief Society Birthday Party

The annual RS Bday party was a super fun night. We have yummy chicken salad croissant sandwiches, shirley temples to drink and super tasty birthday cakes too. I think all that attended had a wonderful night and if you missed it we hope to see you a the next activity.

72 hour Kits

As a ward or shall we say as a Relief Society we are encouraging all families to have a 72 hour kit for each person in their family. We are going to have a few items that we suggest you purchase or gather for your kits each month so that at the end of the year we can assemble these kits. Each person in the family, young and old alike need their own kit full of supplies. Please watch for the reminders in newsletters, side bar on the Blog here and announcement at church to remind you what you are to be doing each month towards your kits. Bow Making Class A Success

Our bow making class series was a wonderful success! Thank you so much Angelica for opening your wonderful home to host this class for 3 weeks. I think all those that attended a class had a great time making bows and visiting with each other. Here are a few pictures snapped at one class. Bow Making Classes

Bows are the must-have accessory for every little girl, and trust me, once she has one, she'll need one to match every outfit she owns!

Learn and make several different kinds of bows and clippies while catching up on some much-needed girl time! Perfect your skills and complete her collection in one or all of the follow-up classes. Bring your own ribbon if you like, or choose from a wide selection of materials available. Bring scissors and a hot glue gun, if you have them.

Classes are on these dates:
Feb 4th - 7pm - Hatch Home (3355 E Hawk Pl)
Feb 11th - 7pm - Hatch Home
Feb 25th - 7pm - Hatch Home

The bows range in price from $1-$2.50 each (depending on size, decorations, fabric used, etc.) Please pay Angelica Hatch the night of each class for the bows you make. Please sign up at church so we can plan on materials needed.

Game Night

BOOK CLUB Meets this week! (Jan 6th) at 7:00PM at Debbie Kutchinsky's house. 14023 E Appleby Rd. (892-6176)
They are discussing: Lemon Tart (a culinary mystery) and Sister Kutchinsky will be making the lemon tart for all of us to sample! Please come and visit with the sisters, even if you weren't able to read the book!

CANNERY 101 CLASS PART 1 Will be held Tuesday, January 12, at 10:00AM at Jaime Votaw's house. 3617 E Kaibab Pl. (474-4363) This will be part of a multi-part series with classes held on different days of the week, some during the evening hours, and some during the day time. We will be learning about 72 hour kits, food storage, solar ovens, gardening, and bread making (just to name a few)
(PART 2 will be held Thursday, January 21, at 7:00PM also at Jaime Votaw's house.)

RELIEF SOCIETY GAME NIGHT An exciting evening of relaxing fun, getting to know the sisters in our ward. We will be meeting at Renee Griffith's house. 3057 E. Blue Ridge Pl, (636-7441) at 7:00PM. Feel free to bring a munchie to share, and prepare to laugh, visit and get to know the girls!!

MUNCH AND MINGLE (our monthly pot luck lunch) will be meeting on Friday, January, 22 at 11:30AM at Candacy Syphus' house. 4049 S. Mingus Dr. (802-4938) Bring something to share and come eat lunch together! Completely informal, kiddos are always welcome!! :)

PLAY GROUP meets every Tuesday (except during CUSD breaks) at 12:00 noon at Layton Lakes Park (feel free to bring a sack lunch if you want!)

Below is a summary of what Sister Syphus talked about on Sunday per the changes in Relief Society Meetings this year.

Prepare Every Needful Thing.
Every meeting that we have this year is going to be with this goal in mind to help all of us prepare. I will explain more about this in just a minute.

• Last October in the RS General Conference, Sister Beck announced some administrative changes to the RS program. In short we are no longer using the term “Enrichment”. There is no longer an Enrichment night or an enrichment committee. Every time we as sisters meet whether it is on a Sunday or any other day it is considered a RS meeting and we can call it whatever we need to call it. We as a ward Relief Society Presidency are to plan these meetings according the needs of the sisters of our ward. Here is how we are going to implement these changes to our ward.

• 1st We have been asked to keep the announcements and business to a minimum during our Sunday mtg. All of our announcements can be found in the binder/ on our blog/ through our weekly emails/ Sacrament Mtg. papers/ Ward Newsletters/ and on our bulletin board. Please call us if you have any questions!!!

• 2nd Three types of non-Sunday meetings we will be having:
Monthly Informal Meetings, which will generally happen on the same day and time of every month, unless you hear otherwise: Munch and Mingle, Park Day, and Book Club.
Quarterly meetings: Same as we have done for the past several years.
Mini Classes These are meant to be practical and to teach or to train different preparedness themes according to what your needs may be. They will generally take place every other month (but that could change as needed). The classes will take place usually on Thursday evenings and run for 2-4 weeks depending on the purpose.
For example: January, Cannery 101 class and February we are going to learn how to make cute hair accessories from Angelica Hatch. Both of these ideas came from suggestions of sisters in the ward

Additional themes will be: financial/budgeting/coupon clipping/ physical fitness-- fun run/walk event/Cheap cooking ideas/ recipe swaps/clothing swaps/sewing classes …
Please attend what you are able and what interests you. We do not want to waste your time, we want to help you. Please share with us your ideas or interests.

• 3rd Krista Gohus is the Counselor over RS Mtgs/Activities. Her committee will be called the RS Mtg Committee. There are two Committee heads, one responsible for the quarterly activities, and one responsible for the mini-classes. Plus, lots of other wonderful sisters helping out with the many mtgs we have going on.
As the year progresses, we will assess what works and what doesn’t and change accordingly.

Greetings Sisters!!

A few announcements...

WELCOME TO: Rhonda Crockett!! We are so glad you are here!!!

Our ward adult Christmas party is coming up this Saturday!! If you signed up to warm a ham, we will bring it to you Saturday morning. Please warm it, wrap it, and place it in a cooler to keep it warm (now THAT'S ironic!) and bring it to the church by 5:45 on Saturday evening. We need a few more people that can warm hams... (about 5) The party starts at 6:00PM, and is a nice dress event!

The giving tree gifts are due this Sunday! Please bring any remaining gifts and gift cards to church on Sunday and give to a member of the bishopbric or RS Presidency. Thank you for your kind generosity!!

Please take a few minutes to check on the sisters you visit teach, and find out if anyone is alone for Christmas, or is in need... if you find a need, please let one of the presidency members know as soon as possible.

After the first of the year, our monthly potluck lunch, (Munch and Mingle) will be the third Friday of every month at 11:30 at Candacy Syphus' house. Bring a dish to share, and come to visit with the sisters! It's a great way to get to know a lot of people! Our first one will be January 22nd.

Just for your next page on the calendar.... On January 14th our Relief Society activity is a fun game night at Renee Griffiths house at 7PM. This is going to be a relaxing night to just kick back, have fun and get to know each other.

Movie Night - Thurs 12th 7pm

Sisters just a friendly reminder that this Thursday the 12th at 7pm we are having our RS Movie Night. It will be at the Votaw home (3617 E Kaibab Pl). We will be watching Miracle on 34th Street (Origonal version in color) and enjoying each others company and also some yummy treats. We ask that you all bring a lawn chair and or a blanket to either sit on or wrap up in. We would love for you to bring a holiday treat to share but it is not a requirement. We will have lots of yummy food to snack on. We will have Krispy Kream Donuts, Movie Popcorn and Smores to much on and Hot Coco and Mulled Cider to sip on too! There will be a warm fire to gather around for those gals that want to visit the night away and a hot tub for those that are daring enough to break out a swim suit (bring your towels). We understand that some of you gals cannot come for the whole night but we would love for you to pop in and say "Hi". See you all there!

Driving Directions - Retreat

Take Gilbert road north to Hwy 87. Follow to Payson, then take a right at Hwy 260 about 12 miles to Control Rd. (This is a left turn without much warning, but it's after the Thompson Draw signs on the 260). Follow Control road about 4 miles (only a mile of this is paved) and turn right at Meads Ranch road. (We will put something up here, since last time the sign was down). Follow about 3 miles to Mile marker 9, you will turn right at Zane Meadows road and we are the first cabin on the left.
